decorating my life

Light My Fire

howdy folks…yes, i know. but, welcome back.

my daughter and i were in a chain gift shop recently and we came across jars filled with matches that had a little square of grit paper that you could strike the match on…they were pricey for what they were and i immediately knew i had just the things to make my own with more of 'me' in the project.

so here is my version...

IMG_0029_2

i knew i wanted it to be vintage looking, so OF COURSE i turned to my Tim Holtz stash…as always...

IPhotofirst, i picked a few metal embellishments; painted them with tarnished brass distress paint and inked them up mushroom alcohol ink to 'vintage them up'...

Pic2

next, i painted the top to my Tim Holtz mini mason jar with picket fence distress paint…i let it dry a bit them wiped some of the paint off and then muddied it up with more mushroom alcohol ink…LOVE this look so much! at this point i wiped a little paint onto the jar and wiped it off to allow the embossing to stand out and make it less perfect...

IMG_0009_2

i filled my jar with my favorite green matches…and cut a piece of the match strike off the box...

IMG_0012_2

i chose some ephemera pieces from different ephemera packs of Tim's and inked them up with gathered twigs ink…and, yes, indeed i did ink the match strike too...

IMG_0013

i chose the word 'shine' from the small talk stickers and inked that up...

IMG_0005_2

i added vintage thread to the arrow (love love love when Paula Cheney does this!!!) and bent it slightly so it wrapped on the jar nicely…time to assemble!

IMG_0017

i used matte multi medium to adhere the layers…and brown paper string to add the number token...

IMG_0020

i absolutely adore the look of those green matches in there…it blows away the jar we saw in the gift store.  i love finding something great and realizing you can make it (and actually do it!!!) with your own touches...

IMG_0023_2

man, that top is incredible…lighting my candles this fall is going to be just that much better with this little jar!!

thanks for stopping in…next time you see something in a store and have a thought 'i can do that'…DO IT…it feels amazing to complete a project and enjoy it!!

Surrounded by Junk

If you are like me, your creative space has to inspire you.  I have to be surrouned by pretty vintage inspiration.  It keeps me inspired, makes me happy, and I am more creative.

I know there are those that see my studio and cringe...and would do the same if they saw the rest of my home...there is A LOT to take in.  I love it.  There are not very many surfaces in my home where you can set something down...very few places.

I have been working away in the studio every spare minute and I took the opportunity to snap a few photos around here to update my gallery over yander on the left side of the blog...so I am sharing a few...

enjoy (if you aren't too freaked out by the 'clutter'!!!

H is for Halloween

the ways to use it challenge on SCS was to use a monogram...i took creative license and used the letter for this halloween card:

Hhalloween
i'm pretty sure i am gonna have a REALLY hard time parting with this one! i am in love...ever make something that just seems so you that you just can't stop admiring it? it happens lots when i look at other people's creations...but not always mine...

i have a special treat for you today! see those pumpkins in the background? would you like to see how to make 'em????

i am a country girl at heart...and, i decorate with a country flair...if it is rusty, sanded, tattered, banged up...antique, vintage, or new...i heart it! so, when i was looking for some cheap pumpkins to decorate with last year that kept with my country style, i got REALLY frustrated! anything that was more country looking was twice, if not triple the price of the bright, fake looking pumpkins (and gourds)...so...here is what i did...

first i took the cheap fake looking pumpkins...

001
these are the hallow styrofoamy ones that you find at most craft stores...paint-able, cut-able, etc...

then i gathered these supplies:

010
the pumpkins of course, a cheapy paint brush, an antiquing medium of some sort (this one is antiquing polish in brown by folk art...but any antique made for crafting, tole painting, etc will work), and lots of paper towels...

015
then, just go to town painting that bad boy up...you don't have to be neat in any way...cover the whole thing bottom to top...it's okay to set it down on the paper towel or grab the top with a paper towel while doing this...here is what you end up with...

024
all covered and looking grungy...grab two paper towels...one for each hand and pick up the pumpkin....just patting off the antiquing with both towels...take off as much or as little as you like...

029 030
how much you leave will make the pumpkin a muted version of it's former self with most antiquing taken off, lots left on is more primitive...this is kinda middle of the road...

034
purposely leave antiquing in the cracks and the stem area...if you take too much off...just brush some more on...it will take a while for it to dry up, but you will be decorating with them within an hour or so...here's before and after...
043
so much better! here is what a white one looks like...before...

046
and, all of the pumpkins after:

051
i just did a few small ones this year to show you how to do it...last year i bought all different sizes and shapes...gourds too...here is what i used them for in the living room...

015 - Copy

017 - Copy

...these are the tops of the two book shelves in the living room...kinda framing in the TV mounted on the wall...

Halloween08

hope you enjoyed the little tutorial and you run to your local craft store to grab up some pumpkins...they are bound to be on sale or clearance cause everyone has CHRISTMAS now! that scares me...a lot!

can't wait for the weekend...so over this work week!!!

ingredients (for the card way at the top of the extra long post!):
SU! very vanilla cs, spooked dp from my mind's eye (also die cuts), ribbon & buttons from stash, heidi swap ghost letter H*, tim holtz journaling ticket, ivory crochet thread, aged copper brad, punches, & nestibilities
catslife press halloween stamp, pallette black noir ink, several distress inks, jumbo java & wheat versamagic dew drops, sponges, dimensionals
*i not only inked up every thing (ribbon, thread, paper, cs, etc) with distress ink, but i also inked up the ghost letter...which is clear to start...i first inked up the front of the h with the dew drop ink, paying attention the edges mostly...then flipped it over and inked up the back with the pallette black ink...before it dried, i used the end of a paint brush to swirl in some detail...then used my heat gun to dry it all up...

peek-a-boo

i see you!  here i am...miss me???  a wee break for a wee time...i have begun a little (not so little really) life project...and i think i needed some time to get that going...thanks for understanding!

barn sale bliss

happy, happy day...after work this morning, a dear friend and i hit the road to temecula for the monthly barn sale!!!  this place and these people make me happy!  it really does fill me up...in a blissful way!

the "i gotta have it" purchase of the day...

009
is it not adorable????? i fell in love, although i was teased for making it look like i was thinking about it...michele knew it had to go home with me!!! she knows me so well!!

here it is all in place on the porch...

003_2
i adore it!!!  here is a picture of a pencil tin i just had to have to add to my school desk...

015
that spiral notebook belonged to my father...it is full of notes written to my grandmother from his piano teacher on what he did that day and what he will do the following week...it also has the prices of supplies and the lessons...i just love it!

here is a picture of the whole school desk area in my kitchen...

021
oh, sorry, did you want a closer look at the speller on top???  well, here you go...

017
how stinkin' cute is that!!!??? a find from a local flea market this summer

i love herbs...i love them in the garden, i love to cook with them...i especially love them in here...

023
it is a double wash tub (you are looking at just the left side of it) that i grabbed at the same time as the speller above....that wringer...how amazing is that? yep...barn sale!!!  that was from a trip a few months ago....it fits my tub perfectly!

had enough? oh, okay...just a few more pictures from the patio...

025
not the best picture, but you get the idea...

026
and the other outer most post of the patio...maybe next time i will share the side against the house!
one more??  here you go...

027
this is the built in bbq that was here when we moved in...well, part of it, anyway...we plan on tearing it out and re-building this summer...for now, i covered it with vintage things and plants since it is unusable...that scale you see there...that was from the friend i treck down to temecula with...it is one of the scales that clearman's north woods inn  used to measure their steaks with in the day...northwoods for those that aren't from here, is a fantastic steak house that has amazing food and snow on it's roof all year!!! okay...think that is enough for today...although i did snap some pics of my favorite easter decorations...hmmm...maybe tomorrow!

hope your friday was as great as mine...great finds, great friends, great coffee!

Devine intervention...

...it isn't my fault...there was definitely Devine intervention! So, there I was pouting all day friday...i was sick and it was rainy, which meant that having taken the day off to go to the Barn Sale  was good because i got to rest, but bad cause i felt too icky to go...

then...chicka comes home from volleyball practice and says that her tournament that was supposed to be in anaheim on sat was going to be in temecula....guess what's in temecula????  you got it!!! THE BARN!!!!

in between her games i snuck away and found my own little heaven on earth!!! YAY!!! i feel slightly ashamed for pouting on friday...and almost ashamed of my giddiness about being able to go...i bought lots of adorable easter/spring things as well as a fabulous vintage ice-cream scale...pictured below...i can't tell you how much i look forward to the barn sale each month...i just adore it...i am sure S.M. is glad that i won't be pouting for the entire month and it was just friday...since i got my fix!!

Img_2584
and, here it is in a full view of the 'ice-cream corner' (the old newspaper stand came from the barn last month):
Img_2582
thank you ladies for another fabulous sale, it looked beautiful!!!

here are a couple of other great finds i have grabbed at the barn...and, i will post some pictures once i am done with the easter/spring decorating...
Img_2585
i adored this child's horse the moment i saw it!!
Img_2587
i found the two largest frogs and had the ladies searching for a third for this shelf...i love them!
Img_2588
i had to have this bike the moment i saw it...it IS pink after all!!!

i know the pictures aren't great (used my camera instead of stealing S.M.'s this time), but i hope you get the idea...

well, hope your weekend it great and your week even better!
